People who talk about names for generations of Americans have reached different conclusions—and, frankly, a lot of people don’t do actual research, so they’re just guessing about the different birth years.

Generation birth years can have varying characteristics and can be influenced by both geography and history.  Geographically, if you are currently a teenager in Paris, France, your generation might be geared towards world peace or fashion. Characteristics of that same age group  in New York City, New York might be geared towards technology and the current presidential climate. Both groups are considered Gen Z.

Big historical events that affect a generation can also be dramatically different across the globe or at least may be regionalized or national in scope. Trends can hit at different times and affect the way things are labeled.

The following list is of fairly common generation labels throughout history:

  • Greatest Generation :1901 to 1939– The formative events that shaped this generation were The Great Depression, FDR’s New Deal, WWII, and the Pearl Harbor bombing.
  • Traditionalists or Silent Generation: Born 1945 to 1965-Post-War American Dream, Korean War, Space Race/Moon Landing, McCarthyism, and Cold War/ Bomb Shelters.
  • Baby Boomers: Born 1946 to 1964- Vietnam War/Protest, Watergate/Nixon Resigns, Woodstock, Summer of Love, Martin Luther King Junior ,and the JFK and Robert Kennedy Assassinations.
  • Generation X: Born 1965 to 1976, Berlin Wall Down, End of Cold War, AIDS,and MTV.
  • Millennials or Gen Y: Born 1977 to 1999- 9/11, Obama, Recession, and the Internet.
  • Gen Z, i Gen, or Centennials:2000 to 2012 Terrorism,Social Media Natives, YouTube/Digital Content.(the shortest time period and first generation to not know a time without cellphones/ internet.)
  • Generation Alpha: 2013-? -Current events that are forming this generation are, Trump/Brexit, Politics, and Immigration Issues. Alpha is predicted to become the most educated and most diverse generation in America.
